Philippines Demand
The Philippines is on track to import a record 7 MMT in the 2018/19 marketing year with demand driven by a shift in preferences from corn to wheat products. Wheat imports have been rising in the Philippines over several years now, however, after typhoon damage cut back the domestic corn crop, the wheat demand has surged significantly this past year for not only human consumption but for animal feed as well. With Australia in a prime location to deliver grain into SE Asia, this could provide additional export opportunities moving forward. The Philippines is currently the top export destination for Australian wheat in 2019, topping the list in January and February.
